Clarence William Anderson (1891-1971), born in Wahoo, Nebraska, and known professionally as C.W. Anderson, was an author and illustrator of children's books. Anderson had an interest in horses and drawing. When he wasn't out riding horses, he was drawing them, taking great interest in their bone structure and conformation. Anderson started his career by illustrating for other authors, but eventually began developing texts to accompany his realistic and lively black and white drawings. He is best known for his "Billy and Blaze" book series.

Unframed: 16" H x 30 1/4" W. Biography: "George Cress was born in Anniston, Alabama and studied at Emory University, American University, and at the University of Georgia under fellow Southern contemporary artist Lamar Dodd. He was a central figure in Chattanooga's arts community and served as President of the Tennessee Arts Council. He sat on the board of the Hunter Museum of Art. From 1951-1984 he was painter in residence at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. The Cress Gallery of Art at UTC is named in his honor." Housed in a grey painted wood frame with gilt accent and off-white fillet. Roman numeral III in pen, en verso. Sight: 11 1/2" H x 13 1/2" W. Framed: 15 3/8" H x 17 1/2" W. First half of 20th century. Note: Jones was an Impressionist painter from Woodstock, New York, and established the Cliff Dwellers studio in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Condition:
Canvas laid on board. Surface grime and scattered abrasions, largest measuring 1" x 1/8". Some of the scattered areas of paint flaking reveal various colors underneath, suggesting the possibility of this current work being painted over a previous oil. Canvas possibly cut, date at lower right partially lost. Frame with some wear and three small nail holes to sight edge.
